Realism Ha!

The following is a letter written by James Rosenthal to the editors of the Inquirer Magazine on March 4, 2000. It was written in response to an article printed in the February 7th edition of the magazine entitled "The Brandywine's collection is just the thing." by Crispin Sartwell.

Dear Editors,

If Crispin Sartwell feels the need to defend Realism ('Getting real" Feb 27 2000) at the expense of Post-modernism, he needs to make a stronger case for it instead of mouthing philistine fluff about contemporary art. Realist Painting is about as out of step as you can get, let's face it. If he's tired of the "radicalism" of modern/postmodern art then he represents a widely held and misinformed public view and is helping to perpetuate that view.

I don't mind the avocation of realist painting, but please don't make gross generalizations about the direction of contemporary art in the process. As an artist/writer, I find this point of view irresponsible. It reflects a conservatism that does a great disservice to contemporary art practitioners in the region. As for needing a hint about what is next in art, I suggest Mr. Sartwell pick up some info on new technology. That's my guess as to where art is heading along with the culture as a whole.
