Mission Statement

"Our mission is to preserve, develop and promote Puerto Rican artistic and cultural traditions, as well as to promote a better understanding of other Latin American cultures and our common heritage"
Taller's programmatic and organizational goals are:

* to serve as an educational vehicle in the advancement of the Puerto Rican and Latino individual;
* to support the community's pursuit for cultural identity and affirmation;
* to preserve and promote the contributions of Puerto Rican and Latino artists of all disciplines;
* to educate students to their cultural roots and history; and
* to serve as a cultural institution committed to the quality preservation of Latino cultural expressions.

Background and History

Taller Puertorriqueño translates to Puerto Rican Workshop. Established in 1974 by Latino artists and activists in the North Kensington area of Philadelphia, Taller initially created a community based graphic arts workshop to provide cultural training alternatives to local youth.  Throughout its history, the Workshop has been a vital resource to the barrio and to the region. It is now nationally recognized as a model organization that uses the arts as a vehicle for social change. Taller provides audiences and neighbors with safe facilities, creative outlets for youth, and education programs that underscore our rich Puerto Rican heritage. Our work presents a “first voice” account of our accomplishments as Latinos. From a humble beginning as a storefront workshop, Taller has developed into a dynamic cultural and educational center. Now housed in two buildings, the workshop has grown to include classrooms, a theater, two galleries, and a  bookstore.

Known as el corazón cultural del barrio – the cultural heart  of the barrio -- Taller Puertorriqueño promotes Latino arts and culture throughout Philadelphia and surrounding areas. More importantly, Taller Puertorriqueño is a supportive and enriching haven for our community's youth. With the arts as a tool, we educate and empower the individual and the community.

The Lorenzo Homar Gallery and the Eugenio María de Hostos Archives and Museum Collection
Lorenzo Homar Gallery

Taller  Puertorriqueño’s Lorenzo Homar Gallery is the only gallery in the region dedicated to Latin American and Caribbean Art .Each year the gallery hosts exhibitions featuring local and internationally recognized painters, sculptors, and installation artists. Our exhibits, which have received acclaim from the arts community, attract visitors from throughout Philadelphia and the Delaware Valley. The gallery's exhibits also act as an integral part of the Taller’s broader educational goals. Receptions, artist dialogues, and workshops make the gallery a dynamic space where people come together to explore and discover the achievements of Latino artists – old and new.
