Art in the Open Accepting Artist Applications
Deadline EXTENDED March 7, 2011 : Art in the Open (AiO) is a citywide event in Philadelphia that celebrates artists, their inspirations for creating art, and the process of art making in the urban environment. Through a transparent creative process open to everyone, AiO acts as a catalyst for a contemporary re-framing of the tradition of creating art enplein air (working outside, on-site), inspiring both artists and audience to see the river and city beyond in new ways. Art in the Open strives to make the artistic process accessible to diverse audiencesof all ages. Visitors will engage with the artists while they are working, whether starting a conversation or simply being a presence in the working space: the collaborative dialogue of creating work in the public realm. Art in the Open 2011 will run from June 9 through 12 along the Schuylkill River Banks Park. A jury-selected group of 40 artists will have the opportunity to create new work in designated areas of the Park -- from the Fairmount Water Works to Locust Street, and at Bartram’s Garden (AiOwill provide additional geographic information to the artists before they begin). Depending on their own inclination or the nature and scale of their working media, the selected artists will be able to move freely within the designated areas or choose to stay in a single location. AiO artists will exhibit selected works created during the four day event in an exhibition after the main event. Each artist will be represented by one or more works that will be selected by the AiOstaff and that are in suitable form to exhibit. If a participating artist’s work cannot be exhibited due to size or its ephemeral nature (a performance work or installation, for example), he/she should plan to make available to the AiOstaff some form of visual documentation of the artwork (such as a photograph, small object or drawing) for consideration to include in the exhibition. Works of art will be offered for sale during the exhibition with a portion of the proceeds to AiO. For complete application details, visit http://www.artintheopenphila.org
