Creative
Artists Network (CAN) is a not-for-profit arts organization
that encourages the professional development of emerging artists.
Each year CANs Art and Photography Boards meet to select
talented and committed artists for a two-year affiliation with
the organization. Deadlines for applications are: February 1
and September 1 for sculptors, painters, and printmakers; May
1 for photographers.
Applicants
must live within a 100-mile radius of Philadelphia and must
not have had a solo exhibit at a commercial gallery or any commercial
gallery affiliation. Although there is no educational requirement,
applicants cannot submit an application while they are in a
degree program.
Although
CAN provides no funds for its affiliates, they have the opportunity
to participate in group shows four to six times a year and to
meet collectors and museum/gallery representatives. CAN does
not take a commission on art sales; instead, buyers are asked
to make a 15% donation at the time of sale. In addition to exhibiting,
affiliates are given the opportunity to earn stipends by teaching
art classes to at-risk youths in city shelters through CANs
Hand-in-Hand Program.
Creative
Artists Network provides its artists with the experience and
exposure necessary to launch liable careers in the visual arts.
Past and present affiliates have been awarded impressive fellowships,
residencies, and museum/gallery exhibitions. Works by CAN artists
are in the collections of 24 corporations and twelve museums,
including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Delaware Art Museum,
Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, and the Studio Museum in
Harlem.
