About the Exhibition

NAWA shows a juried member’s exhibition at the Noyes Museum of Art. The oldest professional women's fine arts organization in the United States presents 47 artists from across the nation in an exhibition at The Noyes Museum of Art. Media will range from painting and printmaking to sculpture. This show nurtures NAWA’s mission of promoting culture and education in the Visual Arts with an emphasis on fine art created by women. Alice Chan, Eleanor Goldstein, Harriet Regina Marion, Jacqueline Lorieo, Judith Cantor, Lolita Bronzini, Pam Cooper, and Priscilla Heep will all display their work and talent in this exhibition.

About NAWA
The National Association of Women Artists was founded in 1889. Five innovative women, Grace Fitz-Randolph, Edith Mitchell Prellwitz, Adele Frances Bedell, Anita C. Ashley, and Elizabeth S. Cheever, established the Women's Art Club after their exclusion from the male-dominated National Academy of Design and The Society of American Artists. Members and female artists grew in numbers and the organization was renamed the National Association of Women Painters and Sculptors in 1913 to reflect this large scale influence. Membership continued to grow through the 1920s and 1930’s. During this time, the association sponsored exhibitions nationally and abroad, and opened its Argent Galleries in New York City. The organization changed its name in 1941 to the present day National Association of Women Artists. NAWA’s permanent collection was established in 1991 and is located at the Jane Voorhees Zimmerli Art Museum at Rutgers University. Works range in date from the present, all the way back to the organization’s start in 1889. Mary Cassatt, Cecelia Beaux, Louise Nevelson, Alice Neel, and Miriam Shapiro are examples of significant artists included in NAWA’s amazing history.

The organization continues to sponsor local and national exhibitions, merit prizes, lectures, art demonstrations, scholarships, awards and other educational programs. NAWA encourages awareness of the immense contribution of women to the history of American art. NAWA is dedicated to promoting women artists of all backgrounds and traditions through exhibitions, professional programs and its historic archive.
