About the Exhibition
Opening reception: September 27, 6 - 9 pm

Landscape photography is seen as one of the most traditional ways of capturing the world around us, but Veronique Cote, director and curator of Yo Darkroom's gallery is examining how some regional artists are re-imagining the theme in her multifaceted exhibition Invented Landscapes. From surrealist photographs, to social landscapes and collages, the nine artists selected for this unique exhibition introduce us to interpretations of landscape with nine distinctive twists. Exhibited photographers include: Anna Druzcz (surreal landscapes), Colleen Cunningham (collages), Katherine Kaminski (sugar maquettes), Chris Macan (infrared photos), Sam Oberter (cityscapes), Sasha Parker (paper models), Ben Schaeffer (models), Keith Sharp (interior landscapes), and John Woodin (social landscapes).

Keith Sharp, well-known for his photographic series of diptychs which pair natural landscapes with staged scenes including man-made materials, toys with the idea of perception. Through some of his most recent works, Sharp creates a photographic trompe l'oeil proving to his viewers that even in landscape photography or maybe especially in landscape photography "things aren't always what they seem..."

While Sharp concentrates on the notions of actual versus alternative realities, John Woodin, a native of New Orleans now living in Philadelphia, takes an altogether different, though equally extraordinary, journey through the architectural landscape of a pre- and post-Katrina city that is emotive on a completely different plane.

Invented Landscapes also introduces a rousing young talent: sixteen year old Sasha Parker who explores not only the creation of cityscapes but also the destruction of them as she pushes bite-sized paper villages to the brink of extinction and beyond with self-made "natural" disasters.

Don’t miss this group show. It is a peek at how traditional themes mixed with an amazing breadth of established and emerging artists rework an old artistic standard into a roller coaster ride that is as playful as it is poignant.
