About the Exhibition
Opening reception: September 6, 6 - 9 pm
On Saturday September 6th starting at 8pm, a motley crew of creative energy will converge on Yo Darkroom for a Karaoke Party to celebrate the launch of their latest video and performance exhibition Empty Orchestras: Art Meets Karaoke. This is truly a performance event that you won’t want to miss.
The show features 5 artists who use karaoke as a form of expression, notably:
Amos Latteier, a Toronto-based artist, invites the public to express their political grievances through a protest phone line, where they can sing their opinion to the tune of Twisted Sister's “We're Not Gonna Take It.” Admit it: you want the phone number now! Well, give it a try and call 215-531-5063.
Chris Barr democratizes the streets of Philadelphia with his Karaoke Ice Cream Cart, a startling yet comedic treat for
unsuspecting passersby. City blocks are transformed into stages as locals become pop stars, singing their favorite karaoke tunes on the spot.
In his Karaoke Manifesto, Gordon Winiemko presents an ultra-hilarious medley of rewritten musical classics - you'll be sure to recognize a few - exploring the concept of free speech and the will to change the world.
Also contributing to the show are Boris Willis, a multi media performance artist and experimental music composer Sarah Paul live at Yo Darkroom.
These artists use the newly revived Japanese pastime from the 70’s to voice everything from political opinion to personal philosophies. Join us at Empty Orchestra to hear their voices and to delve into your own.
