About the Exhibition
The Philadelphia artist community is a complex but tight-knit
social entity. To demonstrate just how important networking
is to this nebulous stratum of our society, Projects Gallery
presents It’s Who You Know, a non-juried, quasi-invitational
exhibition. Projects invited five young artists, all of who
have previously exhibited at the gallery, to in turn invite
five artists each to come together. With no prevailing theme,
the work will represent the taste and artistic expressions
of the initial five. It will be illustrative of overlapping
styles within social groups while highlighting the schisms
that exist between the groups themselves. Relying on the eye
of the artist and honest in its dependence on social networking,
this exhibition reinforces It’s Who You Know.
Freeing the boundaries of the traditional exhibition experience,
this show relies on the artists themselves to present both
the experienced and the novice. Host artists Distort, Conor
Fields, Ashley Flynn, Brooke Holloway and Mia Rosenthal, although
familiar with the work of the invited artists, have challenged
the gallery to create a cohesive display through a veil of
mystery until the moment of installation. The resulting exhibition
is a choose-your-own adventure documenting separate artistic
pockets of Philadelphia, as well as an attempt to break free
from those insular groups for a more inclusive showing. In
the end, this exhibition will certainly prove the necessity
of social discourse.
