The
74th Annual |
| On
March 25, 2000, The Print Center will present The 74th Annual International
Competition: Photography. The Competition is one of the most prestigious
exhibitions of its kind and is the oldest juried exhibition for printmaking
and photography in the United States. Alternating each year between printmaking
and photography, it provides a unique opportunity for local and international
artists to compete in a forum which emphasizes individual talent and expressiveness
rather than a specific exhibition topic. This year, 233 artists submitted over 950 slides. Esteemed juror, Therese Mulligan, Curator of Photography at the noted George Eastman House International Museum of Photography and Film selected 65 pieces by 61 artists for exhibition which showcase the versatility of photography as a medium. Each year, finalists compete for cash and purchase awards of up to $3,000. This year's Print Center Honorary Council Award of Excellence is given to Alexandra Broches (Wakfield, RI) for her "Dream House" series of inkjet prints. "Broches's juxtaposition of colorful children's drawings with toned black and white photographs appear to intertwine differing realities" writes Therese Mulligan. Alexandra Broches's work, along with work by Bill Moseley, (Sydney, Australia) were chosen for inclusion in The Print Center Permanent Collection at the Philadelphia Museum of Art by Kate Ware, the museum's new Curator of Photography. Therese Mulligan will give a Gallery Talk on March 25th at 3:00 PM in which she will discuss the works selected for exhibition in the context of current trends in contemporary photography. It will also be a wonderful opportunity for you to meet Jaqueline Van Rhyn, The Print Center's New and First-ever Curator of Prints and Photographs.* The Gallery Talk will be immediately followed by the opening reception. See the work of competition participant Michael McCarthy. * Read more about The Print Center's new Curator of Prints and Photographs, Jaqueline Van Rhyn |
