Endi Poskovic:

Endiana and Other Tales

from La Souffrance et L'Aventure Series

January 19th - March 3, 2001

About The Exhibits

Opening Reception :
Friday, January 19th, 2001 5:30 - 7:00 p.m. at The Print Center

In
Endi Poskovic's - large format, brightly hued woodcuts from La Soufftance et L'Aventure (a series which began in 1998 during a visit to Southern France) there is a tension between the tedious process of making woodcuts and the poetic and whimsical nature of the images. Enigmatically political, the prints are largely informed by recent events in Poskovic's homeland, Sarajevo, Bosnia. "[It] started out as people trying to make sense of things and ended up as nonsense," explains Poskovic on the political situation in Bosnia. "[My work] is trying to make a play and bring together sense and nonsense." In bringing these opposites together, Poskovic encourages the viewer's participation in his work. "I'm interested in the story being told and reinvented."

In each print, a single image is paired with a single word. Both image and word are sometimes real and sometimes invented. For example, 'Endiana,' in the exhibition title, is a play on the artist's first name and has phonetic likeness to Indiana, one of the many states Poskovic has lived in since he left Bosnia in 1986. Poskovic's work creates a playful, often startling connection between words and images that together reference themes of memory, displacement, voyage, alienation and migration.

Endi Poskovic is Assistant Professor at Whittier College, California where he heads the Printmaking Digital Art Program. Poskovic studied in Germany, Norway and Bosnia. Among his numerous awards, he has most recently received grants from the Pollock-Krasner Foundation and Blue Mountain Center. He has exhibited extensively and his prints are in collections throughout the United States, Australia, Cuba, Croatia, Japan, and Europe.
