Brave/Smart: Philadelphia Selections 4

May 31–July 27, 2001
Opening Reception: Thursday May 31 , 6:30–8:00 pm

“Philadelphia Selections 4” is the fourth in a series that offers a fresh perspective on local talent by inviting nationally recognized curators, writers, and critics to organize an exhibition of works by Philadelphia area artists.

Working from the visual materials of the more than 1,500 artists’ files currently housed in the Levy Gallery Artists Registry, guest curator Emma Amos has assembled an exhibition showcasing the work of nine artists whose works collectively reflect her desire to reveal traditional distinctions that define art: high and low, fine and folk, decorative and conceptual. Amos describes the exhibition as “brave and smart.” Her response to the work of Philadelphia artists has been reactive and reflexive. Her essay, which accompanies the exhibition, describes the artwork chosen for “Philadelphia Selections 4” as “shining a spotlight on visual intelligence, thinking, memory, substance, bloody-minded stick-to-your-guns-ness, and bravery on the part of the artists.” Together, these idiosyncratic works challenge viewers to make connections, stimulate curiosity, and provoke intriguing questions.

Emma Amos is an artist-writer, and a professor of art at the Mason Gross School of the Arts, Rutgers University, New Brunswick. She was the recipient of a National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship in 1983. Her involvement with such feminist publications as Heresies and M/E/A/N/I/N/G, and her ongoing commitment to exposing canonical biases against the inclusion of women and artists of color, make her a perfect fit for the Levy Gallery and its mission to present a program that disregards the traditional boundaries often separating artists by culture, gender, age, and educational background.
