Opening reception: Friday, December 1, 6 pm
The project, Ki/Quest, will incorporate Ki (in Japanese or Chi in Chinese) into art. The concept or existence of Ki is still scientifically a mystery but has been proven and felt by many who practice Tai chi, Yoga, Meditation, and Aikido.
Paul Hamanaka is trying to do the same with his art. Ki exists in all living and non-living things since it is the final building block of all matters in the universe. Ki concept is the fundamentals of some major Eastern philosophies like Taoism, Ying and Yang concept, Zen, and so on.
Condition and/or situation where Ki is and how it is, affects people’s well-being of body and mind.
And, mastering Ki breathing method enriches and empowers people in any field if it’s practiced and used properly and consciously.
In the project, using mostly sculptural pieces without torsos, Hamanaka is trying to make viewers feel the Ki breathing in the exhibition space.
He believes, if the breathing or presence of Ki can be felt from an artwork, the artwork will be coming out to life.
Hamanaka hopes people looking through the installation, will hear the voices and sounds from each piece and/or entire installation without sound system in the space. Or, on the contrary, they may hear the silence at different areas although the space may be noisy with people’s voices and movement.
