A Closer Look 5 continues a biennial series that presents in greater
depth the work of selected artists who have previously exhibited
in Arcadia University's juried "Works on Paper" exhibitions.
This exhibition explores how each of these individuals--all of
whom work in diverse media -- employ their varied approaches to
further narrative-based projects.
Arcadia University Art Gallery is pleased to present A Closer
Look 5. The exhibition marks the fifth installment of a biennial
show presenting in greater depth the work of artists previously
featured in Arcadia University's juried "Works on Paper"
shows. Curated by Sylvia Yount, Margaret and Terry Stent Curator
of American Art at the High Museum of Art (formerly Chief Curator,
Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts), A Closer Look 5 showcases
the contributions of Philadelphia-based artists Jim Hinz, Jennifer
Macdonald, and Kate Moran. At different stages of their careers
and possessing distinct sensibilities, all three artists utilize
a wide range of media to further their narrative-based projects.
Hinz, who received a B.A. in Mass Communications in 1990 from
the University of Minnesota and a M.F.A. in Book Arts and Printmaking
in 1995 from the University of the Arts, was chosen for the 1996
"Works on Paper" exhibition juried by Bill Arning. For
"A Closer Look 5" he will present an installation conceived
around the themes of cigarettes, smoking and failed romance. Hinz's
work is composed primarily of handmade objects (including surrogate
smokes made out of leather and parchment as well as "how-to"
kits for crafting custom "packets" from old shirts)
and a projected music video. Considered in total, Hinz's installation
resonates with public and private themes of loss, addiction, and
obsession.
Macdonald received her Certificate in Sculpture from the Pennsylvania
Academy in 1998 and her B.F.A. from the University of Pennsylvania
in 2001. Featured in the 2001 "Works on Paper" exhibition
juried by Thelma Golden, Macdonald's "paintings on paper"
are mixed-media depictions of decorative household objects and
beloved toys. In A Closer Look 5, Macdonald presents her first
animation project. The video, paired with a series of new paintings,
introduces actual movement and sound to her domestic imagery,
playfully evoking memories of childhood that are at once strange
and familiar.
Selected for three different "Works on Paper" shows
since 1988, Moran received her B. A. in Visual Arts from Antioch
College in 1982, her Certificate in Painting from the Pennsylvania
Academy in 1988, and her M.F.A. in Photography and Sculpture from
The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1992. An artist
who moves comfortably between drawing, photography, and sculptural
production, Moran has conceived of an installation for A Closer
Look 5 that employs all three modes of expression. Spiraling around
the idea of the forest, in both its actual and symbolic states,
the individual components of the work create a visual and verbal
dialogue shaded by personal, ecological and metaphysical meanings.
In the founding spirit of the series, "A Closer Look 5"
explores affinities among the works of these three highly individual
artists. Centered around the theme of narrative transformations,
the exhibition finds points of convergence in each artists' facility
with a variety of artistic methods--a mark of contemporary practice--as
well as in their shared concerns with emotional ambiguity and
intimacy, ideas of the miniature, and mythologies of nature and
culture. The well-crafted and well-loved objects that constitute
and shape the form and content of their work further link the
three in a suggestively allusive relationship.
In September 2001, guest curator Sylvia Yount moved to the High
Museum of Art from the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts,
where she had worked since 1993. Her exhibitions in Philadelphia
include the popular and critically acclaimed "To Be Modern:
American Encounters with Cézanne and Company" (1996),
"Maxfield Parrish, 1870 1966" (1999), and various contemporary
projects in the Academy's Morris Gallery series. She has lectured
and published widely on late nineteenth- and twentieth-century
American art and culture.
In conjunction with A Closer Look 5 -- and as a new feature of
the series -- Hinz, Macdonald, and Moran will each be producing
an affordably priced multiple for purchase.
