The work of Plamen Veltchev is a contemporary visual rumination of how the impetus of individual freedoms can be impeded when interlocked with larger forces. Veltchev explores the struggle to maintain a locus of control in a world where the future is unforeseeable. This sense of uncertainty is captured in his latest collection of drawings and lithographs. Straying from solely lithography, he is able to unleash a new fury with his innovative use of ink, conte, pencil and spray paint. Veltchev’s signature marks are charged. The line complexity creates the turmoil of these large pieces. He reveals his unrest in landscapes that are stuck and divided, weaponry as both interior and broadly explosive, images of apocalyptic foresight, and self-portraits that reflect inner truths. This work conveys pervasive doom on the world scale and its ability to undermine individual autonomy.
