Artist Statement

My background of a typically dysfunctional middle class family has provided much fuel and material for my work. My socio-political viewpoints and opinions were forged in the early years of life and have become the essential founding criteria from which the questions and conversations, that initiate creative thought, are spawned. I have consistently in one way or another traveled a pseudo-socio-anthropological path in attempt to observe and understand people interacting and reacting with in the cultural climate. Through this curiosity of the human psyche reacting within personal and private spaces set against the public arena, I am able to cultivate the content of my work.

While feeding from these intrigues of the private, I attempt to create thought provoking experiences, which are set simultaneously against and within the public stage. This interest of the private vs. public has a long history within the art world, especially within performance, and my aim as an emerging artist is to formulate a future for myself, while constantly acknowledging what has come before me.

“16:02:30:27” is the title and the amount of time required to document the removal of my body hair. In dealing with obsessive, compulsive behavior. In this piece the obsessiveness immediately created a chain reaction of ritualistic experiences that was ultimately intensified by the final editing and it’s installation presentation. The content matter was politically fueled and I was attempting through cleansing my body to talk about the loss of innocence, truth, or faith.
