Wendel A. White - Bio

Wendel White's most recent photographic work includes two ongoing projects; Improvised Images of landscapes, insects and aquatic creatures and Small Towns Black Lives (documentary images of historically African American communities in the southern counties of New Jersey.) The work from Small Towns, Black Lives has been exhibited throughout the U.S. and is available on-line at blacktowns.org. Recent exhibitions of this work include, Manchester Craftsman Guild (Pittsburgh), Stedman Gallery (Rutgers Camden), Center for the Photographic Image (Philadelphia), and the Smithsonian Arts and Industries South Gallery. The Smithsonian exhibition accompanies the publication of Deborah Willis Kennedy's latest book Reflections in Black: A History of Black Photographers from 1840 to present.

Wendel received a BFA from the School of Visual Arts in New York City and a MFA in Photography from the University of Texas at Austin. His work is represented in museum and corporate collections, exhibitions, publications and has been supported through various fellowships. He served on the Board of Directors for the Society for Photographic Education (from 1992 to 1999 and as board chairperson from 1996 to 1999) and as a member of regional boards for New Jersey Save Outdoor Sculpture (advisory), and the Atlantic City Historical Museum. Previously he taught photography at the Cooper Union School of Art, School of Visual Arts and International Center for Photography.

Wendel White is currently Professor of Art at Richard Stockton College of New Jersey and serves as Secretary on the New Jersey Council for the Humanities.
