PICTURING WOMEN, A THREE-VENUE EXHIBITION EXPLORING FEMALE IDENTITY IN HISTORICAL AND CONTEMPORARY WORKS

Bryn Mawr College through May 30, 2004
The Library Company of Philadelphia through April 30, 2004
The Rosenbach Museum & Library through April 30, 2004

Curated by Susan Shifrin, a research fellow at Bryn Mawr's Center for Visual Culture, visiting assistant professor of art history at Ursinus College, and curator of education at Ursinus' Philip and Muriel Berman Museum of Art, Picturing Women juxtaposes contemporary artwork and historical objects to promote dialogue about representations, and self-representations, of female identity. The exhibition's nearly 200 works of 15th through 20th-century art include photographs, printed and painted portraits, diverse cultural artifacts (such as medical treatises, period costumes, and advertising images), and contemporary multimedia installation pieces.

The project is also sponsoring several artist residencies and commissioning new works from regional artists. Local storyteller Charlotte Blake Alston, performance artist and mezzo-soprano Martha McDonald, and Spiral Q Puppet Theater will hold workshops for students from the project’s partner schools, as well as develop public performances for Bryn Mawr College and the Library Company. Students from partner schools will also participate in a unique peer-training docent program in which student docents will mentor classmates in interpreting the exhibition and integrating the questions it poses into their everyday experiences.
