Throughout October, the City of Philadelphia’s Mural Arts Program celebrates Mural Arts Month.  The spotlight events for the 2006 Mural Arts Month are centered around the "All Join Hands: The Visions of Peace" project which seeks to use public art to investigate the unthinkable homocide of youth in the Philadelphia region. For over a year, MAP partnered with the Philadelphia School District, the Department of Human Services, and the Philadelphia Inquirer Editorial Board, and groups from all sides of the debate have participated in a series of community meetings and painting workshops, including youth from St. Gabriel’s Hall, and adult inmates from SCI-Graterford, culminating in the creation of a quarter-mile-long mural (pictured, below) in Center City Philadelphia to be unveiled on October 24.  Featured events in October include an exhibit opening and gallery talk to kick off the month on October 6, two workshops with muralist Don Gensler and Inquirer Editorial Page Editor Chris Satullo, and finally the dedication of the mural on Benjamin Franklin High School.

Other events of note during Mural Arts Month include the release of the new bookMore Philadelphia Murals & The Stories They Tell;a bike tour with Pat Croce; trolley tours with Philadelphia celebrities Phil Goldsmith, Larry Platt, Bernard Hopkins, and Jerry “The Geator” Blavat; plus dedications of new murals such as Alex’s Lemonade Stand and the Zoo Bridge.

The Mural Arts Program (MAP) brings art to every citizen of Philadelphia.  Since 1984, MAP has created over 2,600 murals and works of public art, earning Philadelphia international recognition as the “City of Murals.”  MAP engages over 100 communities each year in the transformation of neighborhoods through the mural-making process.  MAP’s award-winning, free art education programs annually serve over 3,000 youth at sites throughout the city and at-risk teens through special education outreach programs.  MAP also serves adult offenders in local prisons and  rehabilitation centers, using the restorative power of art to break the cycle of crime and violence in our communities.
