InLiquid at International House presents
Virtual Boring.
a new video installation by J. Makary
March 13 – May 1, 2009
Opening reception: Wednesday, March 18, 6 - 8 pm
InLiquid presents Virtual Boring., a new video installation by filmmaker and performer J. Makary at the International House Video Lounge. Part film, part video game, Virtual Boring. draws viewers into a video game environment supported by a loose, timeworn narrative in which a hero and villain vie to "save the girl."
Borrowing visual and sound cues from video games, but eliminating the interactive element, J. Makary’s video installation Virtual Boring. moves through scenes showing game-like activities that proceed without need for the free will of a player. On screen buttons, levels, meters, and players alike are subsumed by the churning imagery and jerky rhythms of early cinema. Inspired by narrative-based video games and the simple stories of early film shorts, Virtual Boring. brings together distant eras and their disparate expectations surrounding inclusion and passivity. As the story unfolds to include more and more absurd visual imagery, it underlines the humor of inevitability in video games, in storytelling, and in life.
