Katie Murken
Debtors Inheritance
Debtor's Inheritance fuses organic objects with mobile technology to create an interactive project supported by an evolving written narrative. Dried gourds that have been cut, shaped, and piled together create compound forms of tunnels, pods, mounds, and caves to act as stations where visitors are prompted to send and receive text messages via their cell phones and engage in a narrative. The text, composed by Murken, layers local history and ecology with dialogue from contributors. The project will be documented at www.debtorsinheritance.com.
Katie Murken is a visual artist with interdisciplinary interests. She works with and between a variety of media including installation, printmaking, and artist’s books.
Much of Katie’s work is rooted in the belief that art is moving in a direction of increased accessibility, visibility, and collaboration. Through book works and installed environments she attempts to identify new venues and situations for viewing and experiencing art. In 2005 Katie received her MFA in printmaking and book arts from The University of the Arts in Philadelphia, PA. Recently, she has joined with artists Lindsey Mears and Katie Baldwin to found the artist’s collective Tango Book Arts, a group dedicated to producing hand-printed and bound editions. Katie’s most recent book edition, entitled For She is Time, is an illustrated narrative that grew visually and conceptually from an installation created in 2004. Katie Murken Lives and works in Philadelphia.
