I’m not a stereotype

Artist Statement

My piece on discrimination uses racism as a way to depict discrimination. The piece is meant to be an ad for a magazine. The ad is part of a fictitious campaign, for a non-profit organization, to fight against racism. The ad is part of a series of five ads, each focusing on a different culture. My hope with this piece was to make people realize the way they look at others. Everyday people judge others without even realizing that they are passing judgments. By stating many stereotypes that are often thought about an African American person, the viewer sees how ridiculous these opinions sound. I wanted for the viewer to look at the person in the ad as an individual and not as a stereotype.
