Original Sin
oil on canvas, 20" x 20"

Artist Statement

Discrimination has always existed and still does whether it is expressed or in a confined, hidden form; conscious or unconscious. It is something that cannot be forgotten or wiped off from our vocabulary. It's just like war: although most of us want to live in peace, there are wars in the world still, regardless.

Goodness cannot be appreciated if there isn't misfortune or evil in the world. The world is like yin and yang. There is not 'bad' without 'good' being near or far, and vice versa.

Discrimination is a very broad topic and never can be 'set in stone', for it's powerful enough like poison and contagious like disease. It's able to transform into a powerful feeling of hate.

Original Sin
does not necessarily reflect on my personal life, although it holds some truth. Through this painting I tried to express the lives of other people as well. People I know or hear about every day. My painting expresses discrimination against women. It describes that kind of discrimination that has begun as an original sin, spreading from the roots of religion.
