The Event
Collab will hold its Fifteenth Annual Student Design Competition at the Philadelphia Museum of Art on Monday, November 12, 2007. This year's competition will be held in conjunction with the celebration of Collab's new gallery in the Museum's Ruth and Raymond G. Perelman Building - the first gallery in the Museum's history to be dedicated permanently to modern and contemporary design. The opening exhibition, Designing Modern: 1920 to the Present, takes a chronological look at the Museum's collection of modern and contemporary decorative art. As always, the theme of the Student Design Competition is linked to Collab's largest annual Event. This year, students are asked to consider the scope of the Modern Design dialogue.

The Theme
Controlling and managing content has always been a central activity of the human condition. Today more than ever, information mapping has become a powerful interdisciplinary strategy that links people to locations, data, organizations, as well as to physical and virtual environments. It has become difficult to separate this activity from what we call design.

The Challenge
Students will design a "Map" that will link associations between people, things, or events within the context of the revolutionary
ideas and trends in art, architecture, and design that developed in the 20th century and beyond. The map should communicate the student's interpretation of the forces which flowed into, through, and around modern design giving shape to its origins and output.

The Judging Criteria
1. Creative Concept (overall idea behind the submission)
2. Conceptual Execution (how well the submission translates the conceptual idea)
3. Construction (craft of submission)
4. Evidence of Research (how well submission incorporates historical understanding)

The Deliverables
1. One 24" x 36" full color, borderless, mounted presentation board which contains:
- A 150 word design statement that explains the research and overall idea behind the entry
- A final high-resolution product image (if the solution to the problem is an object)
2. 3D model (optional)
3. One CD containing:
- One 300dpi JPEG at a final size of 12" x 12" as shown on the mounted presentation board
- One Microsoft Word document containing the 150 word design statement as shown on the mounted presentation board
4. A completed registration sheet (see final page of this document) placed in a sealed envelope along with the cd, securely taped to the back of the presentation board.
*Each entry board must be void of any identifying characteristics representing the entrant's school or name. All entries must include all above stated components. Incomplete entries cannot be guaranteed for consideration.

The Deadline
The competition will take place on Monday, November 12th at the Philadelphia Museum of Art. All entries (mounted presentation board, CD, registration sheet and full-scale physical model [if included]) are due at the Philadelphia Museum of Art by 9 am. Students will return to the Museum at 3 pm for the announcement of the winners and a feedback session by the panel of judges. A reception for the students will follow.
