InLiquid at the Bride presents Nightscapes, new and selected recent paintings by Daniel Oliva that capture aerial and satellite views of cities and coastal regions of the United States at night. The handmade quality of the paintings adds a personal touch to these otherwise universal images, offering a more contemplative view and suggesting an emotional alternative to the technological reproductions often associated with such imagery.

In choosing an outer vantage point, Oliva depicts the artificial lights, which on the ground block out the stars, as terrestrial constellations. He writes, "These lights present a dynamic in which humans gain an advantage over nature and simultaneously lose nature's gift.  Through technology, human societies around the globe are finding ways to replace or ignore the natural world . . . Gradual erosion of the night sky above us has changed our collective unconscious, while the grand carnival of city lights has replaced our need for a night sky. Identifying symbols of night, such as the moon, stars, and darkness are disappearing and, concurrently, our identity in the Cosmos is changing."

Daniel Oliva received his BFA from the Maryland Institute College of Art, Baltimore, MD. He has exhibited his work at Gallery Siano, Philadelphia; the Main Line Art Center, Haverford, PA; the Maryland Art Place, Baltimore, MD; and the Maryland Institute College of Art. He lives and works in Philadelphia.
