AMERICAN PASTIME new work by Katherine Kesselring January 13 – March 20, 2010
"Pastime" is defined as something that amuses and serves to make time pass agreeably, or a diversion. Playing with form, color, texture, and shape, Katherine Kesselring creates environments which examine ideas of storytelling, theater, and the natural world. She uses folklore to explore contemporary culture through handmade craft and narrative.
Defining “American” is a current concern for Kesselring, who has traveled extensively in South America to study textiles and their use in daily life. This exhibition is an exploration of the term 'American' through fabric-based pastimes. Kesselring is an installation artist making connections with communities on the east coast. American Pastime is her first experience at The Painted Bride.
