Leslie Mutchler, Untitled (Manufactured Utopia I: High Density Housing),
2008, digital print on Somerset paper, 60” x 80”
Using ubiquitous catalogue glossies from various home and design retailers, Leslie Mutchler creates collages, digital drawings, and coroplast installations that investigate consumer desires to purchase an organized lifestyle. Focusing on furniture that functions solely as storage, Mutchler’s work explores the dichotomy between ever-growing accumulation and the simultaneous drive for containment, minimization, and order. Adapted Utopia presents a series of landscapes, structures, and abodes that challenge us to consider the socioeconomic implications of this phenomenon.
