Fabric Arts Collaboration with Teacher Pam Toller and Shaw Middle School Students
Opening Reception: Friday, April 27, 5 - 8 pm
As part of an innovative new curriculum developed by Shaw Middle School Teacher Pam Toller, recent resident Betty Leacraft taught Shaw students about traditional African methods used to make vibrant and vital fabrics. Two large banners these students created under the guidance of Leacraft and Toller will be displayed at AIRSPACE, along with a selection of Leacraft’s work. Teacher Toller designed the fabrics curriculum as a participant in 40th St. Artist-in-Residence Director Edward M. Epstein's seminar "Visual Art and Society" in the Teachers Institute of Philadelphia. A University of Pennsylvania-sponsored program, the Teachers Institute gives public school teachers an opportunity to research and design new curricula under the tutelage of Penn faculty members. See www.tip.sas.upenn.edu for more details.
