Since August of 2005, 40th Street Artist-in-Residence has been using AIRSPACE for exhibitions of resident work, and work made or curated by other members of the West Philadelphia community. AIRSPACE has also played host to a variety of performances of interest to the West Philadelphia community. Refer to this page for a schedule of upcoming exhibitions and special events. Color Explorations
Fabric Arts Collaboration with Teacher Pam Toller and Shaw Middle School Students
Opening Reception: Friday, April 27, 5 - 8 pm

As part of an innovative new curriculum developed by Shaw Middle School Teacher Pam Toller, recent resident Betty Leacraft taught Shaw students about traditional African methods used to make vibrant and vital fabrics. Two large banners these students created under the guidance of Leacraft and Toller will be displayed at AIRSPACE, along with a selection of Leacraft’s work. Teacher Toller designed the fabrics curriculum as a participant in 40th St. Artist-in-Residence Director Edward M. Epstein's seminar "Visual Art and Society" in the Teachers Institute of Philadelphia. A University of Pennsylvania-sponsored program, the Teachers Institute gives public school teachers an opportunity to research and design new curricula under the tutelage of Penn faculty members. Past exhibitions at AIRSPACE include Oddgard, a show of wall constructions by Jill Maio (November 2006); a storytelling fabric arts, and painting collaboration by Linda Goss & Gretchen Shannon (October 2006); Carrion: A Cartography of Roadkill, a mixed-media installation by Elysa Voshell (September 2006); a show of gouaches by Alex Paik and Kate Stewart (May-June 2006); the first Annual 40th Street Artist-in-Residence Benefit Show and Auction (December, 2005-January, 2006); A solo exhibition by resident artist Jessica Doyle (November-December, 2005); A solo exhibition by resident artist Delia King (October-November, 2005); a group show of resident work (September-October, 2005); Lee Tusman’s, Four-Wheeled Feast, a show about food trucks in West Philadelphia (August-September, 2005).
