"Past Presence: Contemporary Reflections on the Main Line: A Lecture with Denise Markonish and Mark Dion"
Curator Denise Markonish and participating artist Mark Dion will speak about their involvement in the Main Line Art Center’s upcoming public art project: Past Presence: Contemporary Reflections on the Main Line. In addition to Mark Dion, the Art Center has also commissioned Bob Braine, Kelly Kaczynski, and Nari Ward to produce artwork for the project. The artists will create a series of large-scale, temporary, outdoor installations around Lower Merion Township from April through October, 2004.

"How to Photograph Your Art, " presented by Karen Mauch, photographer
Karen Mauch has been photographing 2- and 3-dimensional work for artists for over 20 years and will impart her experience to you on how to best present your artwork for the camera.

Gallery talk with In Our Own Backyard exhibition artists:
Robert Winokur, ceramicist; Beth Philips Brown, poet and storyteller in Welsh and Celtic tradition;
and
Joshua Mosley, animator.
These recipients of 2002/2003 Pennsylvania Council of the Arts Individual Fellowship Awards will discuss their artistic processes and show or perform examples of their work in a dynamic presentation.

"What Every Artist Needs to Know About Personal Income Tax," presented by Philadelphia Volunteers for the Arts (PVLA)
Become familiar with tax-related issues confronting you as you move forward with your artistic career. This lecture will present valuable information about what deductions can be claimed, specific tax forms to be used, tax implications of the various forms of legal business entities and how to organize business and tax records to minimize the chances of getting audited.

"Getting Started as a Public Artist," presented by Susan Myers, artist and art administrator
Are you an artist interested in breaking into the field of public art? What are the rewards and challenges of working as a public artist? As part of Past Presence: Contemporary Reflections on the Main Line, project manager Susan Myers will provide information on how to research and apply for various public art opportunities around the country. Learn where to go to find these opportunities, as well as tips on preparing a successful proposal and application.

"The Politics of Place: the Evolution of Public Art in Philadelphia," presented by Charles Moleski, Program Manager for the Fairmount Park Art Association's
New Landmarks program
Philadelphia's rich tradition of public art will be filtered through the lens of spatial and identity politics in this lecture expanding on the theme of Past Presence: Contemporary Reflections on the Main Line. Illustrated with slides, the talk will also show how trends in contemporary public art have influenced the way the Art Association commissions new works of public art in Fairmount Park and around Philadelphia.
