Susan Lowry's painted assemblages of tin and carved wood incorporate images borrowed from art history. Sarah McEneaney renders her narratives in a simple style on an intimate scale. While Susan Lowry exploits the printed patterns of found tin, Sarah McEneaney emphasizes unmodelled blocks of color. Using diverse means, their work embodies similar concerns for personal narrative. Interwoven dream and personal imagery provide thematic structure for Susan Lowry's classical references, primarily to art of the early Renaissance. Eye-catching figures against stark landscapes explore themes of transformation and transcendence; Thirteen's woman-child, borrowed from Botticelli, remains aloof while observing her family in conflict. More direct, Sarah McEneaney focuses on loved ones in scenes from daily life --thereby confronting such contemporary issues as AIDS and women's health through their effect on her life and the lives of her friends. Dense with the details of familiar people, places, and pets, these paintings expand the traditional field of view by incorporating more visual information than could be seen at one glance.
