Artist Statement
While studying design in my native Chile in the 1970s, I became interested in pre-Columbian art, especially in the rock art done in my own country. I was encouraged to do further research by Hans Niemeyer, a renowned archeologist.

Together with my husband Ricardo Guajardo, who is also a designer and graphic artist, I visited the solitary and awe-inspiring valleys, mountains, deserts, and rock formations of Chile, which are repositories of this art. I also traveled to Spain to study the caves of Altamira in the Basque country, which being the home of my paternal ancestors connected me to my roots.

My work—be it in textile and graphic art or painting—springs from this research and exploration, and concerns my connection to an ancient past. Just as a poet uses letters and words to compose verses, I use the signs and symbols found in rock art to create new poetic spaces. While these images exist externally, I feel that I am also extracting and recovering them from my own memory.

Now I am immersed in painting, continuing the same thread of my former research and finding new roads that enlarge and enrich my horizon of inspiration and creation. Lately, I have become interested in ancient systems of writing—like ideograms, pictograms, and alphabets. I am intrigued that rock art evolved into writing systems.

I have been attracted, as well, by optical effects of brief duration that appear before closed eyes after looking toward the sun or into sunlight reflected on the surface of water. In these fleeting images, I recognize forms similar to those found both in rock art and early writing systems.

My current paintings derive from my former research, from dream images and sometimes from a spontaneous painting technique. These sources provide me with geometric shapes and primal elements, like starts, suns, moons, cosmic seeds, elemental matter and also figural forms, all of which travel in an evolving world, floating across the virgin earth, archaic oceans, and cosmic spaces. These images are a universal yet mysterious writing that directs me to my collective unconscious and reminds me that I have existed since time immemorial.

In addition to painting, I work together with my husband on surface and textile designs intended for women's apparel and home fashion. I use pre-Columbian motifs reinterpreted in a contemporary way, as well as stylized florals, abstracts, ethnics, and organic shapes, among others. For some designs, I borrow ideas from my paintings, but quite unexpectedly, the designs themselves give rise to new paintings that explore my long-term concerns. I recognize that even though my medium changes, I am still entranced by the core idea of my work--human connectedness in a cosmic environment.
