Artist Statement
My images often deal with contemporary social issues. The processes of Mark making and printmaking are integral to the representation of the concept. I am committed to the craftsmanship and I take great pleasure in the execution. The work continues to be unified by references to my earliest visual vocabulary, icons and books that I experienced growing up Irish Catholic. Barriers, was motivated by the U.S. action to build fences to keep out illegal immigrants. Equally important are the marks and the meditative process of building a drawing. Hours references medieval books of hours in its format. It is a response to the events of 9/11; a secular object for meditation on those lost. The Red Dress plays with word and image. The meaning of the dress is challenged with a change of context. Illuminated addresses literacy. The images are grotesques and marginalia from illuminated manuscripts. They are each assigned a letter of our alphabet.
