Grounded Series
The “Grounded Series” consists of images made by physically constructing scenes in real spaces as opposed to being made digitally. In this series, I have photographed the landscape, but with a twist. I began this series by sketching various ideas of how I could bring trees, grass, or clouds indoors as well as put curtains, wallpaper, and floors outside. After photographing the item that I was going transplant, I then printed the image close to life-size as an enlarged xerox. Depending on the shot, I either adhered the xerox to foam board to act as a prop or to a wall to act as a backdrop. By blurring the boundaries between interior and exterior spaces, I attempt to create mysterious images that cause the viewer to do a double take. Within these real and fictional spaces, nothing is grounded.

Nature Boy Series
When I was a little boy, I very much enjoyed exploring nature by collecting bugs, looking for critters in creeks, and by taking walks. In the “Nature Boy” series, I have combined my interests in nature and self-portraiture by having portrayed myself transforming into a tree creature. In doing so, I am able to step into my romanticized view of the world. I photographed familiar situations but with a twist in an attempt to make the viewer do a double take. The inherent awkwardness of this character trying to blend in portrays my experiences as an outsider trying to fit in to my environment. I began this series by creating sketches of the various ways that I could imagine myself transforming into this creature. The props that I created for these performances were created from natural and artificial materials – bark, leaves, flowers, old clothes, fabric, plastics, paint, and glue. While some of the costumes have remained intact, others have fallen apart. A photograph is the end result of these performances.

Something Peculiar Series
In this series, I photographed ordinary scenes that were transformed and staged so that they have a performance element to them. The images look normal, but contain an odd and quirky twist to them. Through creating ambiguous and puzzling images, I attempt to make the viewer look at ordinary life in new and unique ways. I am interested in pointing out the irony and contradiction in life. Not everything is what it seems to be.

Same While Different Series
I became interested in creating diptychs are noticing how some object or thing, whether in a photograph, painting, or real life, could resemble or mimic something else. In this series of photographic diptychs I have purposely isolated subjects in each photograph as a means of comparing them to one another. Through the juxtaposition of subjects, I attempt to create work that is humorous and that speaks about perception. Largely our understanding of the world around us is shaped by assumptions of what we see.
