Artist Statement
Stone is my inspiration and medium. My passion for stone has brought me to explore and live in the landscape/stonescape of the Italian Apuane in Tuscany where I have lived intermittently for the last 25 years, on a wildlife preserve in the fossil stone regions of Texas, in Connecticut along the granite shoreline and in the Philadelphia area where I was born and have returned to live and work in the past year. Stones quarried from these locations are integral to my work, which is specific to the sites for both private commissions and public art projects. Italian marble, Pennsylvania granite and slate, Connecticut granite, and Texas limestone and sandstone are brought together in many projects. These landforms are an expression of my journey.

Stone has been my continual connection to nature, and the substance with which I communicate thoughts and concerns for the human condition. I have worked to create a language in stone which is in part referential, a blending of person, place, and animal -- capturing the spirit of all. This form is both architectonic and organic in nature. It is measured, carved, cut, and built to endure. Some stones remain raw and unfinished when the stone demands to be left untouched. In this sense, the stone becomes context and content. Each installation has a story relating to the place and its participants. These stories or themes compound during the process. The joining of the stones is not only a means of physical connection, yet also a metaphor for layers of relationship, both psychological and metaphysical.
