Artist Statement
Histories of thought, great inventions, and master works of art have all come from a sense of urgency and fear. With each generation and in all cultures there is something worthy of evoking this sentiment of disparity. We are in an age of virtual realities, misrepresentation, and failed communication: a toxicity that manipulates our experiences and perception. My pictures find presence and context drawn from everyday anthropological artifacts, with larger than life scale, amplified color and detail, these images create within themselves an abstracted landscape which imposes a new meaning from the Gestalt of everyday objects. This new meaning and its narrative fundamentally examine the emotions of the current sociopolitical landscape within the realm of the Hyper Real.
I am exploring ways of making one image that has the content of twenty: similar to history painting, creating one picture that could be observed and enjoyed for years, revealing itself slowly over time. My work competes with a society dependent upon multimedia communication, specifically the power and attraction of films and video. With mural-scale and architectural distortion, along with a hyper-real imposition of color, my pictures excite a similar response. The scale is dictated to me by culture, the content is a result of my society, my friends, family, and personal life experiences.
