| Artist Bio
I am a textile/visual artist living in Philadelphia. I graduated from Penn State University with a major in English and a minor in art. Afterwards, back in the late 80's, for 4 years in Berkeley, CA., I apprenticed with 3rd generation French tapestry weaver, Jean Pierre Larochette and his partner, Yael Lurie, a painter and designer for tapestry. I then went to Aubusson, France to continue weaving as an artist-in-resident. I also had the opportunity to be an artist-in-resident in Hachioji, Japan, through the Japan Foundation. Though still weaving pictorial tapestry, I also weave with unusual materials. I am the former director of the DaVinci Art Alliance, and still serve on the board there. I am a rostered teaching artist for the PA Council On the Arts/ Artists and Education, Young Audiences of PA., and BuildaBridge. Through the Mural Arts Program in Philadelphia, I painted a 7' x 500ft wide mural called Wall of Rugs: the global language of textiles at Girard and Belmont Avenues featuring the textiles of 43 countries.
I exhibit locally, nationally and internationally, and have work in private and public collections. I am committed to the transformative power of art in people's lives and the sustainability of such transformation by involving the community.
Regarding my work, specifically, I am interested in the gestural quality of the woven line, and the juxtaposition of antique motifs alongside of pop-op materials. My paintings are often narrative. I am currently doing a new body of work of large tapestries from paintings. As well, I am revisiting the peace vigil weaving project and currently am weaving the U.S and Iraq flags with mixed materials and paper matches. Give a call if you'd like to be invited to an "igniting" or "cutting-off" event. |
