Artist Statement
My work displays interactions and encounters with myself, those that came before me and those that have contributed to taking me to another level. Those interactions emerge from conversations with a fellow artist, opinions from an inner-city teenager, a vivid dream that my grandmother tells me or even patterns that remind me of my childhood. I display these experiences, not just to tell a story, but to record, document, and present my truth. Overall, I strive to present stories that reflect on the past and give us insight on why things are the way that they are now. I create to document my struggles, triumphs, observations and changes. I create to represent my existence and those that have contributed to my journey.

Artist Bio
Michelle Angela Ortiz is a mixed media artist, skilled muralist and a community arts educator. Culture, spirituality, community and the sense of self are strong elements in her work.

For the past eight years, Ortiz has worked with various nonprofit organizations in Philadelphia. She is a highly skilled muralist and has created over thirty large-scale murals and mosaics nationally (PA, NJ, NY) and internationally (Ecuador & Costa Rica).

Ortiz has exhibited her paintings and prints in numerous galleries in Philadelphia. She has various works in permanent and private collections in Philadelphia and abroad. Such as Stedman Gallery (Rutgers University), Galeria Tonatzin (San Juan Bautista, CA) and Xicanoindio Gallery (Mesa, AZ)

Besides teaching in the community and producing her studio work, Ortiz is a founding member of Las Gallas, a Philadelphia-based multi-disciplinary arts collective that incorporates all of their developed skills in theatre, visual arts, dance, film, poetry, spoken word & literature.

Las Gallas stretches the boundaries of arts collaborations by involving new ways of creating through workshops and mutual interactions. Since then they have gathered to share stories, inspire dialogue and debate around ideas of family, traditions, religion, education and gender roles.
