Artist Statement
My work revolves around an exploration of places through systems, space, and memory. On a comprehensive scale, these are the systems that guide movements such as airflow, plumbing, or electricity; while on a personal scale, they aid in the organization of ones belongings or thought patterns.
I am specifically interested in mapping, creating, or focusing on systems found in inhabited buildings or domestic settings. I pull from different experiences and periods in my life, distilling time and literal space into drawings that can connect a place from my past to places that I currently inhabit. These connections, both physical and personal, can take the form of a drawn house-system, a chart, or even the repeat of a pattern.
I continue this inquiry through my site-specific and sculptural work. The structural architecture acts as a vessel whose main purpose is to hold the system(s). Through the addition of a new object into an existing space, systems that are perceived, but unseen, become apparent; often times because these additional objects subvert their intended function. When creating a new space or environment, the architectural structure and the systems become interdependent, in turn functioning as one organism.
