Artist Statement
The book For She is Time has its origins in a large-scale fiber installation. The narrative text was written as an accompaniment to the piece, providing an account of the mythical creation of the knitted form. To the rhythm of this textual score, For She is Time introduces a world of cause, effect, and disappearance. Inside of the book there rests a land where the forces of nature shape reality and human presence is seated among the things of the world - and not above them.

Debtor’s Inheritance
1-8. Debtor’s Inheritance, 2007, site-specific installation with gourds
The Schuylkill Center for Environmental Education, Philadelphia, PA

Artist Statement
Debtor’s Inheritance is site-specific and interactive installation that was created as part of Green Machine, a multi-media based exhibition on the grounds of the Schuylkill Center, in Philadelphia. As visitors explore the grounds of the Center they encounter a series of stations demarcated by manipulated gourds. At each station the gourds prompt participants to send and receive short text-messages, which layer local history and ecology with residual dialogue from contributors to the project. Participants can selectively piece together this non-linear, and mysterious narrative to create a portrait of the Center as a living site that embodies the struggle between progress and preservation.

Artist Statement
Knowing that nature will prevail, I observe it. The universe whirls about me and it is a pleasure to discover myself included, to know that I may tinker with the immensity of it all. As human beings we exert ourselves in ever-greater influence on our environment, and I like to think of art-making as a more gentle form of intervention.
I am interested in creating spaces where art and experience intersect. Whether these spaces take the form of inhabitable installations, book structures or images, I am interested in constructing artificial landscapes that are rooted in particular encounters and histories. My background in printmaking has been distilled into an interest in the multiple as a form of accumulation that allows me to explore my relationship to place and the haunting qualities of memory. I repeatedly combine objects and images with text to tell stories that layer my experience in the world with my imagining of it. There is a mythic quality to my written narratives, which avoid resolution to allow for an authentic inquiry into the meaning of the work. |
