Artist Statement
I've always considered myself primarily a figurative photographer, but recently my work has been more and more pure landscapes. The lack of the human form anchoring my image has not really changed how I compose or what my images are about; trees have simply become my models. I feel that this work still speaks to the issues that we must all confront as we grow, but in some way not working with a model has freed me from some limitations. Where my work with models was almost always all about youth, beauty, and self awareness, my trees seem more suited to address a wider range of life issues: Isolation, aging, independence, and of course death.

I find that the use of false color allows me to create an image that is very pretty on the surface and yet the way I compose the picture and the subject selection leaves open infinite opportunity to layer in more meaning. My landscape work is visually pleasing but with many from this series I leave the door open to discussion about issues beyond the basic aesthetics of the image.
