Artist Statement
I work with soft drawing media on paper to create large-scale, archetypal portraits of women. I am concerned with psychological and emotional states and the tensions within them: rage and tenderness, confrontation and concealment, empathy and autonomy. I am fascinated by the history of portraiture in painting and by the ways in which changing conventions reflect ideas about gender. My portraits playfully refer to the past but explore contemporary reality, seeking to subvert traditional expectations and to convey a sense of freedom and fluidity of identity. |

Artist Statement
I enjoy using the tradition of portraiture and the sensuality of classical techniques to redefine identity and to question assumptions about gender, beauty, and normalcy. Whether I am finding a fiery pattern of stretch marks on a pregnant belly, or expressing an inner self through the addition of facial hair to an otherwise female portrait, my work is a way of articulating and expanding my experience of life. |

Artist Statement
The Breast Portrait Project is about celebrating and reclaiming the female body. It began in 1998 when I started doing torso portraits for women on commission, mostly at women's festivals and retreats. I documented the process by photographing the women with their finished portraits and asking them to record their thoughts and stories in "The Breast Portrait Book", a still-growing collection of over a 300 women's writings.
It is through this project that I have come into contact with women who have survived breast and other cancers, and have been moved by their courage, honesty, and unique perspectives on the body.
Questions that I feel inspired to raise with my work, are: What does it mean to be whole? To be female?
Why are some wounds considered heroic and others a cause for shame? What is aesthetically pleasing about symmetry? Asymmetry?
I like to create triptychs out of the portraits so that there is both a dialogue between them and a sense of community.
