Artist Statement
In my paintings, I re-examine biblical narratives that have been used as the inspiration for work throughout art history. I am interested primarily in female figures and the roles that they play in the Bible. I re-cast the women in a contemporary setting, allowing the viewer to re-imagine the characters, sometimes obscuring their identity completely.

Instead of depicting the narrative climax, I imagine the women as they were in the moments surrounding what is explicitly described in the Bible. I use the literature describing moments of action to depict the related moments of inaction and quiet. I imagine the women alone and waiting, or reflecting after the fact of a violent or heroic act. I am not interested in a literal description of biblical figures, rather in creating a sealed symbolic moment that is inspired by, but moves beyond a material and literal occurrence.
