Artist Statement
Exhibitions of my work have included series of images that represent distinct narratives, and which are informed for the most part by my interest in storytelling, cinema and its relationship to photography. These narratives are drawn from a variety of sources. For instance Tête - à - Tête takes its title from a body of photographs by Henri Cartier Bresson and alludes to the photographer’s original work. It is, however, the reconstruction of a particular conversation that took place between two people. The Hills, is a series of images loosely based on a short story by Hemingway. Similarly, the photographs and book titled, Ollie, Ollie in come free, were created in collaboration with writer, Doug Bohr.

In a broad sense, these images reflect my ongoing interest in the ways that the photographic image can portray a psychological relationship between the characters in each narrative, and of course between you, the viewer, and the subject of the photograph. Take for example, the series titled Tableau. These images correspond not only to the physical spaces of the house in which the untold drama takes place, but also, and to a greater extent, to the unexplained emotional or psychological distance between the principle characters.

The space that I refer to between viewer and subject is nowhere more apparent than in Condensation.  In it, the condensation creates a veil, a barrier of sort between viewer and the subject which is, in the photograph and in the video of the same name, only removed by the actions of the subject that is, not coincidentally, represented by me, the artist.

Finally, each work is in and of its self a narrative, but each is also a part of a larger over-arching body of work that is supported by every individual effort or new work. More specifically, I see each story forming a larger story that continues to reveal itself in a variety of forms, be it in a photograph, book or video.
