Artist Statement
My work is rooted in drawing from observation, but has come to encompass photography, computer manipulation, and mixed media installation. What unites my recent projects is a desire to capture a likeness of the outside world, but also include my feelings and thoughts about it. For this reason, I have been interested in transparency, which allows me to layer the various modes (perception, conception) of seeing. The computer has offered a way to enhance my work--creating complex overlays and enabling me to expand the range of color. As I work, I try to strike a balance between immediate response and the re-configuration of things according to my ideas.

Artist Biography
I received my training at Yale (BA) and Indiana University (MFA). Among my recent exhibitions were City without Expressways at the Crane Arts Building in Philadelphia. This large-scale mixed media installation combined painting and transparent overlays to contrast the ideal cities of European painting with present day reality. A previous exhibition, Means of Transport, at the University of Pennsylvania’s Burrison Gallery, combined drawing and text to document my family’s travels in Europe and the former Soviet Union during World War II. Before that I created a set of portrait drawings entitled, Insult to Injury, each of which incorporated insulting words that had been spoken to each sitter at some point in his or her life. This series was exhibited at the University City Arts League in Philadelphia. I have exhibited in various other cities throughout the country, including Chicago, Indianapolis, Baltimore, Washington, and San Antonio. I have also held teaching positions at The University of Pennsylvania, Spelman College, Georgia Tech, and San Antonio College. I contribute regularly to Art Papers magazine, and have authored numerous articles (with education scholar Marybeth Gasman) pertaining to the intersection of visual art and African American higher education.

I am currently executive director of the University City Arts League in West Philadelphia. The Arts League offers a wide range of classes in visual and performing arts; its gallery presents an array of exhibitions in various styles and media.
