Artist Statement
I have always enjoyed the immediacy of drawing as a form of self-expression. As well as capturing a likeness of the outside world, drawing records the inner life -- the thoughts and feelings of the artist as he or she struggles to understand the subject matter. Because of its fluidity, and because it allows the application of one mark over another in transparent layers, I find wash to be particularly well suited to my art. This transparency can lead to a myriad of color possibilities within the monochrome of the ink. I have also used the computer to enhance my drawings--creating more complex overlays and expanding the range of color. As I work, I try to strike a balance between immediate response and the re-configuration of things according to my ideas. The drawing begins with direct observation, but gradually shifts toward interpretation; it comes to include a wide range of thoughts, from the geometry of nature to the ordering of the world in a political and social sense.

Artist Biography
I received my training at Yale (BA) and Indiana University (MFA). Among my recent exhibitions were Means of Transport at the University of Pennsylvania’s Burrison Gallery. Works in this show combined drawing and text to document my family’s travels in Europe and the former Soviet Union during World War II. A previous exhibition, Insult to Injury, consisted of a series of portraits, each of which incorporated insulting words that had been spoken to each sitter at some point in his or her life. This series was exhibited at the University City Arts League in Philadelphia. Before that I created a group of drawings entitled Delaware Vistas Condensed that united landscape from vastly different parts of the Delaware Valley. These works reflected on the rapid encroachment of urban sprawl on wild lands. I have exhibited in various other cities throughout the country, including Chicago, Indianapolis, Baltimore, Washington, and San Antonio. I have also held teaching positions at The University of Pennsylvania, Spelman College, Georgia Tech, and San Antonio College. I contribute regularly to Art Papers magazine, and have authored numerous articles (with education scholar Marybeth Gasman) pertaining to the intersection of visual art and African American higher education.

I currently direct the 40th Street Artist-in-Residence program, located in West Philadelphia. This program grants free studio space to neighborhood artists on a six-month rotating basis.
