Artist Statement
The images shown here are a portion of a much larger body of work that represents well my sensibilities as well as a personal visual approach.
This body of work entitled Petah Tikva was born in this particular city in Israel known as “the mother of all settlements.” The spirit of this city guided me in the research of my own identity as an individual raised in the Jewish culture and religion.
Even when I thought that I might be seeking a spiritual home in the land of Israel, I became nevertheless disappointed by the image that this country projects, which doesn’t correspond to the home of which I dreamt. In this work I wanted to explore the tension that exists between peoples’ ideals and the reality of modern urbanization.
Spaces
Photographs capture a space in time. The space that I chose to capture depicts human impact on the land. In this way, I seek to draw a connection between the land and the marks we leave upon it.
In French there is an expression: “Le terrain vague” – the undefined territory. These images present the problem of urban development responding to increasing demographics in this uncertain space. The landscapes also reveal at times certain signs left behind that can eerily be retraced in the cultural myths of this society.
Pioneers
While the buildings rise out of the land and are connected to it, their inhabitants rise within these images but lack a connection to the land. The framing of the image does not permit us to see their feet on the ground. They are alienated by their own land, but look towards the sky, towards something…
The style of these images is similar to propaganda of the early 20th century, when Jews from around the world were called to become pioneers in the building of Israel.
The modern pioneers depicted in these portraits symbolize my hope. They must build the spirit and intellect of an ever-evolving Israel, and are the new gateway to the future.
