Water, Water Everywhere Installation at The Physick House Museum, Landmarks Contemporary Projects, The Philadelphia Society for the Preservation of Landmarks, February 2008

This installation was created in response to the history of the house, its inhabitants, and events in Philadelphia history. The bedroom installation explores the Yellow Fever epidemic of 1793, a tropical disease that was carried up from Haiti by French colonial refugees and spread throughout Philadelphia by mosquitoes. The four-poster bed is hung with netting embroidered with text, “mosquitoes”, and a linear map of North America. The settee is adorned with a pillow screenprinted and stitched with a molecular image of the yellow fever virus. On the wall hangs an embroidered image of clouds. The downstairs breakfast room installation brings us to present-day catastrophes. A cascade of silk and beads floods the room through the window, with crocheted and beaded foam trickling over the floor. The table is set with a broken water main pipe, sending another cascade onto the floor. On the wall is an embroidered map of Philadelphia, showing all of the former waterways that crossed our city.

Artist Statement
I work in embroidery for several reasons. I stitch everywhere: on the train, on my lunchbreak, in front of the TV, even during the sermon at church. The portability of embroidery makes it possible for my art to be an integral part of my everyday life. I do not have to save my ideas for when I have time to be in the studio. The rhythm of stitching is meditative and calming. Each stitch you see is evidence of my hand and of my time, a precious commodity in this frantic age of technology. As a traditionally female occupation, embroidery strengthens my connection to my maternal ancestors. However, my use of embroidery for fine art challenges the preconceptions associated with the materials and techniques.
