Artist Statement
I am interested in patterns that can be graphed and abstracted from sets of data.  Currently the data set involves earthquake information–the location, magnitude, intensity, and depth of the seismic events that happen on a regular basis.  The frequency of these events was an initial surprise, but after researching plate tectonics I learned that these regular events are necessary to the habitability of our planet.

I am specifically interested in the earthquakes greater than magnitude 2.5.  These earthquakes can be followed, and the data can be collected via several internet sites.  I  plot this information using lengths of thread directly correlating to the intensity of the earthquake.  Using the Richter Scale, a logarithmic measurement of this intensity, I equate the different lengths of thread to individual seismic events. What I discovered through this exploration, is that the hot spots of activity often create patterns of arcs.
