| Artist Bio
Carol Cole's mixed media sculptures are inspired by the works of ancient tribal artists and architects -- archetypal forms that speak a universal language. Her incorporation of contemporary found objects makes an ironic comment on our culture.
Her award winning work has been included in many prestigious national and regional shows and is in collections around the country. Numerous professional offices, hospitals, corporations, religious and educational institutions have commissioned custom sculptures.
In addition to working in her Philadelphia studio, Cole teaches papermaking and collage at the Main Line Art Center in Haverford PA, and has taught at the Delaware Art Museum in Wilmington and University of the Arts in Philadelphia. She also offers a motivational workshop for artists called “Doing What Comes Naturally.”
Cole was named the Panta Rhea Foundation 2002 Mentor of the Year, and was chosen by the Philadelphia Museum of Art for the Art Futures artist residency program. She has done art residencies in schools across the country.
Raised in Arizona with the Catalina Mountains a constant presence, Cole daily encountered a landscape both dynamic and serene. Her work today embodies her love of, and intuitive response to, the textures and interplay of light and color in nature.
At Stanford University, Cole studied history, art history, literature and anthropology and received a Bachelor of Arts with honors. She continued her studies, earning masters degrees at the Harvard Graduate School of Education and Syracuse University.
After several years as a high school teacher and educational television producer, Cole made the commitment to pursue art as a full-time career. She helped found Village Square, a crafts cooperative in Syracuse, New York, and became a successful ceramic artist.
Moving to Philadelphia, Cole participated in a program in which artists from many fields brought together their diverse ideas and experience to explore paper as an artistic medium. This course proved to be a turning point and Cole has been working with paper pulp and mixed media ever since.
In paper pulp she found the ideal medium. Using handfuls of pulp as though it were clay, she could still get strong textures, but now she could work on a much larger scale, imbed objects and investigate the wonderful possibilities of color.
Cole draws on her diverse background to make her art. She uses multicultural references, both ancient and modern, and sees beauty in unexpected places. She takes the relics of our time -- found manufactured items -- and, by combining them with paper pulp, transforms common everyday objects into iconic abstract sculptures.
