| Artist Statement
My childhood summers were idyllically spent on the shores of the Great Lakes of Northern Ontario in a simple cottage, watching fish and birds under a huge blue sky by day and brilliant northern lights by night, I became a creature of nature, tuned into the buzzing, luminous, abundant life of summer. These days were the seeds of my enduring relationship with nature that has informed my art.
I am a biologist as well as an artist by training. My art references my scientific and intuitive understanding of the deep complexity of inter-relationships that I have examined, admired, and thought about for decades. At the core of my work is an emotional contact with living things, some of it coming out of earlier days of wading in the cold waters and marshes of Canada, or later, peering through a microscope at a wild array of dancing microorganisms, complete with tiny beating hearts and peddling appendages, or determining which species of grass or weed was growing in the water.
References in my paintings and monotypes prints come out of something that I can only call outwardly and inwardly atmospheric: the light, the dark, the movement of air, the silent and sometimes secretive passages of things through it, and the world whirling through space containing all the life that inhabits it. |
