Artist Statement
Storm Prediction (An artist book)
In Mexico,  I  tried to follow the international news by reading the newspaper La Jornada each morning.  You can imagine how difficult this was for me considering I was just learning Spanish.  I understood general information about events, but did not understand the details.  I wasn’t exactly sure what was going on in the world.  But at night I dreamt of birds, and I knew that things were going wrong everywhere, a storm was inevitable.  In the 1700’s a sailor believed that a dream of birds predicted a storm.

I created the images and carved the 26 woodblocks for this book while traveling in Mexico.  The images are printed on Nideggen paper and bound in an edition of fifteen in Philadelphia, PA, 2006.  Each page size is 7-1/2" x 10", creating an open accordion book measuring a10' in length.

Artist Statement
I primarily work as a printmaker and poet, combining text and image.  My work focuses on printing multiple plate and reduction woodcuts in relief on a Vandercook SP 20 and hand-printing using traditional techniques of Japanese woodblock printing.  The physical repetitive process of cutting and carving into woodblocks, the layering of ink, as well as the production of multiples serves as a direct response to the tactile act of making things.  My printmaking endeavors are time consuming in contrast to our modern society where everything is made to be fast, efficient, slick and reproduced.

Life informs my work.  I draw from my experiences as a single mother, teacher, volunteer, visitor and guest.  I am dedicated to learning from the people and places that surround me.  I have had incredible opportunities to travel as an artist to Scotland, Nicaragua, Mexico and Japan.  My growth as an artist has resulted from having had the opportunity to live and work with people from these communities.

My images create a visual analogue for my writing, bearing witness to both the ordinary and extraordinary events of human life.  I work in series; my prints complete each other in a non-linear narrative, attesting to the complexity of the human condition.   Daily life intersects with themes of poverty, relationships, culture, natural disasters and dumb luck.

Katie Baldwin is an experienced bookbinder and printmaker.  Her experience working as an artist in other cultures has been fundamental to the development of her work.  She has participated in exhibitions in Beijing, China where she received The Honorable Mention in BIRD 2005 International Art Award; at space 1026 in Philadelphia, PA; Miejska Galeria in Lodz, Poland; The Soap Factory in Minneapolis, MN; and Project Mobilivre a vintage Airstream trailer touring exhibition of artist books, zines and independent publications visiting venues in Canada and the US.

In 2004 she represented the Mid-Atlantic States at the Nasgasawa Art Park Pilot Project.  She was selected through a juried process, organized by Rutger’s Center of Innovative Print and paper, to spend three months on Awaji Island in Japan.  During this residency she learned traditional techniques of Japanese printmaking and papermaking from master carvers, printers and papermakers.  The residency was funded through a Leeway Foundation Window of Opportunity Grant. In 2000, The Barbara Deming Foundation in New York City provided a book production grant for Baldwin to hand-print and bind an edition of woodblocks depicting a story of personal loss and transformation due to the events of a house fire.  She has also received funding through the Evergreen State College for a residency in St. Andrews, Scotland to hand-print and bind a book of woodblock prints.  She was selected through the Philadelphia Print Collaborative to work at the University of Pennsylvania to produce a limited edition print for the 2005 portfolio. She recently received a Ludwig Vogelstein Foundation grant to travel in Cuba.  In 2006 she was the resident artist at Prescott College and has returned from traveling and working in Mexico.  She recently received an Independence Foundation Fellowship in the Arts to complete a portfolio of ten prints.

Katie Baldwin received her Masters of Fine Arts in printmaking and book arts from the University of the Arts in 2004, she received the The Elizabeth C.
