Artist Statement
Storm Prediction (An artist book)
In Mexico,  I  tried to follow the international news by reading the newspaper La Jornada each morning.  You can imagine how difficult this was for me considering I was just learning Spanish.  I understood general information about events, but did not understand the details.  I wasn’t exactly sure what was going on in the world.  But at night I dreamt of birds, and I knew that things were going wrong everywhere, a storm was inevitable.  In the 1700’s a sailor believed that a dream of birds predicted a storm.

I created the images and carved the 26 woodblocks for this book while traveling in Mexico.  The images are printed on Nideggen paper and bound in an edition of fifteen in Philadelphia, PA, 2006.  Each page size is 7-1/2" x 10", creating an open accordion book measuring a10' in length.

Artist Statement
I am interested in making work by hand. Images are made up of multiple blocks and each block is carved, inked and printed by hand. Carving and printing woodblocks is time consuming in contrast to our society where everything is made to be fast, efficient and overproduced. My process is a physical reminder of limitations, while serving as a direct response to the tactile act of making things.

My images create a visual analogue for my writing, bearing witness to both the ordinary and extraordinary events of human life. I work in series; my prints complete each other in a non-linear narrative, attesting to the complexity of the human condition. Daily life intersects with themes of poverty, relationships, culture, natural disasters and dumb luck.

My work is about my confusion between the personal and the political. About trying to distinguish the point where policy-making and power at the national level collides with the everyday lives of ordinary people.

In 2000, The Barbara Deming Foundation in New York City provided a book production grant for Baldwin to hand-print and bind an edition of woodblocks depicting a story of personal loss and transformation due to the events of a house fire.  She has also received funding through the Evergreen State College for a residency in St. Andrews, Scotland to hand-print and bind a book of woodblock prints.  She was selected through the Philadelphia Print Collaborative to work at the University of Pennsylvania to produce a limited edition print for the 2005 portfolio. She recently received a Ludwig Vogelstein Foundation grant to travel in Cuba.  In 2006 she was the resident artist at Prescott College and has returned from traveling and working in Mexico.  She recently received an Independence Foundation Fellowship in the Arts to complete a portfolio of ten prints.
