Artist Statement

The prints are a small selection of abstract pieces done in etching and collography. I've been working in the etching process for some seven or eight years now while my experience with collographs extends back just a couple years.

I adore the look of etchings. I don't think there is another print process which creates such rich and varied textures. Unfortunately, the process can be very time consuming not to mention the problems with toxicity using etching acids and the cost of copper and zinc plates. These are some of the reasons, in addition to my natural curiosity, to look into the process of collography.

Instead of working on a metal plate, collography uses materials such as mat board, on which one can glue materials while cutting into the mat to create a mini relief print. The material, as I'm using it, doesn't lend itself to representational work which encourages work in abstract shapes.

For work in both processes, I've chosen to deal with abstract shapes as simple stand-ins for human relationships.
